This Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde day trip is the fullest royal day out of Copenhagen in the catalog. It is a 9-hour loop listed at $169.39 per person with a 4.9 rating from 2,418 reviews. It is our editorial pick in the catalog. The day runs by air-conditioned minivan with Wi-Fi and bottled water, in a group capped at 16 travellers and usually smaller. You visit three heavyweights in one go: Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, the fortress Shakespeare readers know as Hamlet Castle, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, and Roskilde, the former royal capital with its cathedral. The listing calls itself the only royal-castles tour that adds Roskilde, and in this catalog only the four-site day with the Viking ships goes there too. All entrance fees are included, and pickup comes from central Copenhagen hotels or the tour bus parking behind Tivoli Gardens. This day suits travellers who want to see the most possible in a single day out of the city and are comfortable with a lot of walking and steep stairs. The honest edge in one sentence: three royal sites in 9 hours means the guide sets the clock, and Kronborg is the first stop of three rather than the whole day. If you are still weighing options, start with Hamlet Castle tours compared before you book anything.

Quick answer Price, length, pickup rules and the one limit that decides the booking

The deciding constraint comes first: the listing states this tour is not suited to people with mobility problems, because there is a lot of walking and steep stairs. The price is $169.39 per person and the day lasts about 9 hours, from a morning start in Copenhagen to a drop-off back in the centre. You get a guided visit inside Kronborg Castle, and all entrance fees are included at all three stops. Pickup is from your hotel in central Copenhagen, or from the tour bus parking area behind Tivoli Gardens across the street from Copenhagen City Hall. You must contact the operator 24 hours before the start to confirm your exact pickup time. Lunch is not included, you pay for what you order at a local café.

Key takeaways

What the $169.39 Ticket Covers

The $169.39 per person price bundles more than most competing listings in this catalog. The operator stresses that all entrance fees are included, at Kronborg Castle, at Frederiksborg Castle and in Roskilde. You also get the transport, the guide and the hotel pickup in the deal.

What is on the list

  • All entrance fees included, which the listing stresses is unlike some of the competing tours
  • Transport by air-conditioned minivan
  • Wi-Fi on board and bottled water
  • Small group size, no more than 16 people and usually less
  • An English speaking and knowledgeable guide
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off from hotels in the center of Copenhagen

What you pay for yourself

Lunch and drinks are not included. The tour stops at a local café and you pay for what you order there. That is the only exclusion the listing names.

Comfortable shoes for stairs and cobblestones are worth packing, plus a layer for the wind off the Øresund. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the start, and infants sit on an adult's lap, so all ages are welcome on paper, with the walking caveat below.

Kronborg Castle First

Kronborg Castle in Helsingør is the first stop of the day. This is the real name of the castle the world calls Hamlet Castle, after Shakespeare set his play here. The town itself is Elsinore in English, the anglicised form of Helsingør.

Kronborg stands on the northeastern tip of Zealand at the narrowest point of the Øresund, which is only 4 km (2.5 mi) wide here, with Sweden visible across the water. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2000.

What you see inside

You get a guided visit inside, and the castle rewards it. The Ballroom measures 62 by 12 m and was the largest hall in Northern Europe when it was completed in 1582. The Little Hall holds seven tapestries from a series of forty showing one hundred Danish kings, commissioned by Frederick II around 1580.

The chapel dates from 1582 and was the only part of the castle to survive the fire of 1629. Below ground, the casemates hold the statue of Holger Danske, Ogier the Dane, who legend says will wake if Denmark is ever in danger. A cannon tower gives a view over the sound to Sweden.

The Hamlet connection

Shakespeare probably never visited the castle. He wrote the play around 1600 and is believed to have drawn on the legend of Prince Amleth recorded by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century. Hamlet was first performed at Kronborg in 1816, by soldiers of the garrison, and the tradition became regular from 1937.

Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Kenneth Branagh and Jude Law have all performed there.

For opening hours and ticket prices on the day, see the castle's own Kronborg visitor information.

Frederiksborg in Hillerød

The second stop is Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, a Renaissance castle built on three islands in the castle lake. It houses the Museum of National History, so the visit mixes royal state rooms with centuries of Danish history under one roof. On its own, admission would cost $18.76 (125 DKK) for an adult, with children 0 to 17 free, but on this tour the entrance fee is already covered.

A different kind of royal building

Where Kronborg is a fortress built to collect the Sound Dues and face Sweden across the water, Frederiksborg is a residence, all water and facades rather than cannon. Seeing both in one day is the point of the route. You get the defence story at Helsingør in the morning and the dynasty story at Hillerød after it, with the guide framing the contrast between the two.

The Day, Stage by Stage

The listing gives no clock times for the stops, so this follows the order and shape of the day rather than the minutes. The operator confirms your exact pickup time 24 hours before the tour starts.

  1. Pickup

    Central Copenhagen

The van collects you from your hotel in the centre of Copenhagen, or you meet the group at the tour bus parking area behind Tivoli Gardens, across the street from Copenhagen City Hall. Contact the operator 24 hours ahead to verify the exact pickup time, since hotel pickups begin before the tour starting time.

  2. Morning start

    Out of the city

The minivan leaves Copenhagen for North Zealand. The group is 16 travellers or fewer, usually less, with Wi-Fi and bottled water on board and an English speaking guide narrating the way.

  3. At Kronborg

    Hamlet Castle in Helsingør

A guided visit inside Kronborg Castle, the fortress Shakespeare made famous. You see the Ballroom, the tapestries of the Little Hall, the chapel that survived the 1629 fire, and the casemates with the sleeping Holger Danske. This is the first of three stops, not the whole day.

  4. In Hillerød

    Frederiksborg Castle

The second stop is Frederiksborg Castle on its three islands in the castle lake, home of the Museum of National History. Entrance fee included. The guide sets how long you stay here.

  5. At Roskilde

    The former royal capital

The day turns west to Roskilde and its cathedral, the burial church of almost all Danish monarchs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch happens at a local café along the way, paid for by you.

  6. Return

    Back in Copenhagen

After about 9 hours in total, the minivan drops you back in central Copenhagen. Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the start if your plans change.

Roskilde, the Old Royal Capital

The third stop is Roskilde, the former capital of Denmark, and this is the card the listing plays hardest. It is one of two listings in this catalog that go there. The city's great sight is Roskilde Cathedral, the burial church of almost all Danish monarchs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right.

You enter with the group, fee included, and walk among the royal tombs.

Why it changes the day

Most other trips in this catalog stay north of Copenhagen, along the coast to Helsingør and inland to Hillerød. Adding Roskilde sends the route west as well, so you end the day with the earliest royal history rather than only the Renaissance castles. The trade-off is time.

Three sites in 9 hours means each stop gets a fixed window, and if Roskilde is your priority above the castles, note that the Kronborg, Frederiksborg, Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Ship Museum Day Tour adds the Viking Ship Museum on Roskilde Fjord to the same city.

Where the Day Starts

Without a hotel pickup, the tour leaves from the bus parking behind Tivoli Gardens, across the street from Copenhagen City Hall.

Who This Day Fits

This is a day for travellers who want range. One booking, three of Denmark's biggest sights, no tickets to buy, no trains to figure out. The small group of 16 or fewer keeps the minivan nimble and the guide personal, which the listing sells as a more personal experience than a coach tour.

Who should look elsewhere

Be clear-eyed about the physical demands. The listing is blunt that this tour is not suited to people with mobility problems, with a lot of walking and steep stairs involved. If you need an easier tempo, the Easy-Pace Kronborg Castle and Frederiksborg Palace Tour from Copenhagen is built for slow walkers, and the North Zealand Castles Private Chauffeur Tour: Kronborg, Fredensborg and Frederiksborg is the only wheelchair accessible listing in the catalog.

If you want deep time inside Kronborg alone, a 4-Hour Private Hamlet Castle Tour from Copenhagen by Train gives you 1.5 hours inside with a private guide. Families are fine on paper, infants ride on an adult's lap, but the stairs rule applies to everyone.

How It Compares

This listing is our editorial pick, and it earns that on coverage and inclusions. The table below puts it against the closest alternatives in the catalog, from the budget Sweden crossing to private car days. What the $169.39 buys here, others sell as extras or skip entirely, and the cheapest option does not go inside the castle at all.

How big is the group on the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde tour?

The group is capped at 16 travellers and is usually smaller. The listing sells this as a more personal experience than the bigger coach tours. You travel in an air-conditioned minivan with Wi-Fi and bottled water.

Where does the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde tour pick up?

From hotels in the centre of Copenhagen, or from the tour bus parking area behind Tivoli Gardens, across the street from Copenhagen City Hall. You must contact the operator 24 hours before the tour to verify your exact pickup time, because hotel pickups start before the tour starting time.

Is lunch included on the Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Roskilde tour?

No, the listing states this directly. There is a lot of walking and steep stairs across the three sites, and the tour is described as not suited for people with mobility problems.
